I have always liked to read. When I find a book that
I really love, I can read it many times and always enjoy it. The following
books are just a few of the stories of which I never grow tired!
SARUM by Edward Rutherford
Sarum,
the novel of England, is a story that spans ten thousand years, and
accordingly, it is nearly 900 pages long. Needless to say, it will take some
commitment and no small amount of time to read this book, but it is worth the
effort.
This
is a mostly fictitious story about a real place in England and the extremely
long history of occupation and civilization of that area. The story begins far
back in the mists of time and follows several families throughout the ages
until the twentieth century.
The
scenery and Mr. Rutherford’s descriptions of life, love, war, family and faith
from ancient times to present are vivid and breath-taking. The place where the
five rivers meet, from Salisbury plain down along the river Avon to
Christchurch has a rich history and the author brings much of it out in this
wonderful book. He has presented some interesting ideas about several
mysterious places in this area and how they came about, from the ‘Barrows’ to
Stone Henge.
So
find a comfortable chair, put the phone on silent and travel through time to
Sarum.
The Hitch Hiker’s Guide to the Galaxy by Douglas
Adams
This
is a laugh-out-loud funny book! I totally get Mr. Adams’ sense of humor, and I
adore his writing style. I don’t know how many times I have read this book, and
it never ceases to entertain me and tickle my funny bone.
Arthur
Dent is a bit of a clod living a boring, clod-like life. His situation does not
improve any when he and his (unbeknownst to him) alien friend escape earth’s
destruction by hitching a ride with the Vogon fleet that just demolished earth
to make way for a hyperspatial express route. The story follows Arthur’s
hilarious journey across the galaxy.
This
is a fun, sometimes irreverent book and a humorous look at the universe and one
man’s place in it. Strap in and prepare to blast off to worlds previously
unknown, and don’t forget your towel.
The Eyre Affair: A Thursday Next Novel by Jasper Fforde
In the zany world of Miss Thursday Next, someone is kidnapping characters from the original manuscripts of classic works of literature! These heists result in characters disappearing from every copy ever published and the reading public is outraged.
Thursday's job as a Special Operative in the Special Operations Network, Literary Division, has her on the case. She must track down the evil person responsible and set the classic works of fiction back to rights.
Such a fun book and very well done. I like the humor and the surprises throughout this story, and I love the character Thursday.
